Knoxville legislators urge UT to opt out of outsourcing

Sen. Richard Briggs and Rep. Rick Staples coauthored a guest column for the Knoxville News Sentinel Friday urging University of Tennessee Chancellor Beverly Davenport and President Joseph DiPietro to opt out of Gov. Haslam’s controversial facilities management outsourcing proposal.

Here’s an excerpt from Friday’s guest column as published by the Knoxville News Sentinel:

“The lack of transparency and the conclusions for savings have been questioned. More importantly, the contracted multinational corporation, Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL), would control the core maintenance services at the University of Tennessee and put in jeopardy the careers and benefits of the dedicated workers and their families. Job protection and benefits guarantees are proposed in the contract but expire after five years.

As the senator and representative with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in our districts, we listen closely to the voices of those most affected by the plan. The university workers and their families oppose outsourcing because it threatens their jobs, benefits and security.”
