Update on Privatization at Mountain View Youth Development Center

In early April, the Department of Children’s Services signed a contract with out-of-state private security provider G4S to privatize Mountain View Youth Development Center.

However, there is a serious problem with the property’s deed from 1989 which could force the facility to shut down. According to the department, when the county transferred the property, a clause was added that states only juveniles considered “non-violent” may be housed on the property.

The deed is like a restriction covenant in a neighborhood. All current occupants in the industrial park where the Developmental Center is located must sign off on language, developed by G4S, to amend the deed and make it clear that violent offenders may be housed on the current Mountain View sight.

We are in contact with the department and are monitoring this situation closely. As we know more,
we will keep our members up to date.
