State Law Provides State Employees Time Off to Vote

As a reminder, State law provides that all state employees must be allowed time off from work to vote:  “any person entitled to vote in an election held in this state may be absent from any service or employment on the day of the election for a reasonable period of time, not to exceed three (3) hours, necessary to vote during the time the polls are open in the county where the person is a resident.”

Also, the state may not penalize or reduce the employee’s wages for time off from work to vote.  The employer, however, may specify the time in which the employee may be absent from work to vote.  T.C.A. 2-1-106.

TIP:  Inform your supervisor that you require time off to vote at least one day before you intend to be absent.
