Session is almost finished for the year. This week the House passed their budget bill. Once the Senate passes their budget bill (most likely Monday), both houses will negotiate to resolve any differences between the two bills. After both houses pass the final version, the budget will go to Governor Bill Lee for his signature.

We will update you on details of the final budget once approved.

Earlier this week TSEA had a good meeting with DCS Commissioner Jennifer Nichols. As soon as legislative session adjourns for the year, we will begin working together with the department to schedule dates for the commissioner’s meetings with caseworkers. When these meeting dates are published, we encourage our DCS members to make plans to attend and to voice their concerns freely.

TSEA plans to meet with Senate State & Local Gov. Chairman Steven Dickerson soon to set up parameters for this year’s summer study session which will look at the Longevity for All and the Burden of Proof bills. TSEA members can expect a communication from us in the coming weeks with next steps on how you can assist in our efforts to move these bills forward.

This year on the hill has been unique for Tennessee and our association due to the presence of a record number of first-year legislators. We are grateful to have developed some new relationships while strengthening established bonds. As we wind up this year’s legislative session, we will on our website and via email blasts continue to keep you up to date on the latest developments on the hill.
