Government Affairs Director

The Tennessee State Employees Association (TSEA) has an immediate need in Nashville for a Government Affairs Director to join our team.

Work Location: Nashville, TN
Schedule: Full-time (in-office time – flexible)
Compensation: Salaried position w/benefits ($75,000 – $80,000 range)

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES:

LEGISLATIVE:

  • Follows State Legislation and makes recommendations on TSEA positions on relevant bills to the Executive Director.
  • Attend Legislative Committee Hearings.
  • Research legislative and administrative issues facing state employees.
  • Draft legislation and find sponsors to carry bills during session. Drafting of resolutions as needed.
  • Along with the Executive Director, develop and draft proposed legislative agendas each year for legislative committee consideration.
  • Communicate TSEA positions and the legislative agenda to legislators, their staff, the Governor’s administration, TSEA Board of Directors and TEAM.
  • Responsible to effectively communicate legislative and administrative policy developments between to the association and membership.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Governor’s Administration and the Association, on the budget and TSEA’s legislative agenda.
  • Serve as a liaison between Legislative members and their staff, and TSEA.
  • Responsible to coordinate legislative and membership input to legislative bills and administrative changes to policy and rules that might be suggested.
  • Work with Tennessee Board of Regents and University of Tennessee to solve issues facing TSEA higher education members.
  • Update Legislators on TSEA events – chapter meetings in legislative districts

POLITICAL ACTION:

  • Attends all TEAM meetings.
  • Be a TSEA “face” on Capitol Hill.
  • Recommend and help coordinate endorsements of state legislative candidates between TEAM and local chapters.
  • Advise and coordinate TSEA effort in campaigns to help elect endorsed candidates.
  • With approval of Executive Director and in cooperation with TSEA Field Staff, develop and conduct training of TSEA members at the chapter level on political action and involvement.
  • Coordinate legislative appointments for TEAM PAC Day on the Hill. (if needed)

TSEA INTERNAL:

  • Attend Board of Directors meetings as requested.
  • Working with the Field Staff, responsible to coordinate the annual Legislative Dinners.
  • Working with the Exec. Director and Staff Events Planner, responsible to facilitate Lobby Day on the Hill.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

REQUIREMENTS:

  • College degree required. Preferred political science degree.
  • Experience lobbying or legislative service.
  • Experience working with political campaigns.
