Gov. Bill Lee this week presented his 4th State of the State address. While he didn’t outright mention state employees in his speech, he also released his FY2022/2023 Budget Proposal, which proposes funding a 4-percent salary pool to provide raises for state and higher education employees. Gov. Lee’s budget also proposes funding to increase the 401(k) match (for 1 year), an increase to correctional officer salaries, a significant contribution to the state pension fund, and considerable recurring funding for market adjustments.
“This budget is good for our state employees,” TSEA Executive Director Randy Stamps said. “It will take some time to sort through all the details, but we are pleased to see funding for several of our legislative priorities included in this proposal. We are grateful to Gov. Lee for continuing to prioritize our great state and higher education workers, and we look forward to working with the members of the Tennessee General Assembly on the finer details of this budget as well as our remaining legislative priorities.”
TSEA will now work with legislators to help build support for keeping these proposals in the final budget. In addition, we have many other legislative priorities to navigate through the legislative process. We are very encouraged by this budget proposal and the preliminary conversations we’ve had on the hill thus far. We will soon publish bill numbers for legislation supporting our legislative priorities.
